This small sampan comes from Donting Hu, the furthest west of the three large lake complexes along the Yangtze River in Hunan Province, China.
This is a general purpose boat, using several methods of fishing, but more than that, it was the permanent year round home of the owner and his son.
There are many family fleets composed of this style of boat, living together in amongst the numerous low islands that surround the lake and its many offshoots.
Each boat is visited on a regular basis by fish merchants in larger sampans, who then convey the fish, which have been kept alive in the fish holds in the forward part of the boat, in this case Yue Yang.
This boat was given to the museum by John Swires & Sons, one of the great trading companies of Hong Kong.
