On January 20th 1969 John Fairfax left Grand Canary Island with one purpose in mind; to row to Miami, Florida - nowhere else; not just across the Atlantic, but to Miami.
The distance, if a crow could fly it, 3600 miles but this would mean rowing at least 4000 miles, probably more.
On July 19th, after 180 days at sea he made it and incidentally became the first man to ever row the Atlantic alone, beating Tom McClean, who was crossing from West to East in Super Silver, by six days.
Britannia was designed by Uffa Fox, who relied to some extent on his airborne lifeboat experience, and was built by Claire Lallow of Cowes.
