The Caballito is simplicity itself - so much so that unlike most boats they are built by the fishermen themselves.
They are ridden through the surf as a jockey rides on the flat (a caballito is a pony) and his paddle is a thick bamboo split in half. They are ridden like a horse with legs hanging down into the water. They are unlikely to have changed in many thousands of years, and are built by the fishermen, though each boat may only last a year or so.
We are grateful to Captain Hefford, the British Defence Attache in Peru who found these boats and transferred them to Callao for shipment to England via the Pacific Steam Navigation Company on their container ship the Orbita.
