These Coracles are used as tenders to larger boats or as fishing boats in their own right. There is also an example of a sailing coracle in the Macao Maritime Museum.
Little is known yet about this well-built coracle except that it is used by the Vietnamese on their fishing boats, either to carry nets or as a tender.
The use of woven bamboo in Vietnam extends beyond this simple craft to larger boats. It is to be found forming the bottom of planked craft up to eight metres long and is replaced in its entirety when worn out.
We are much indebted to Superintendent Dick Bell of the Hong Kong Police for finding this coracle on a refugee's boat, for obtaining it and for sending it to England.
