Every large dhow, whether Arabian, Indian, Pakistani or Persian, carries a Huri, or dingy. They are usually in sheltered waters as a general duties boat, for running between ship and shore with small quantities of stores or with messages. Most dhows will also have another, larger boat, sometimes called a jalibot which often has an engine.
The dugouts of this part of the world start life like the one to the right of the boat, in other words with a few extra pieces scarfed in as possible and no reinforcing ribs, but as age begins to tell, so the 'cleanness' of the line and appearance goes, until they resemble a planked boat more then a dugout.
This boat was found adrift at the entrance to the Gulf of Oman by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary 'Tarbatness' and was presented to the charity by her master, Captain J. H. McLoughlin.
