The Molicero's main use is the collection and carriage of seaweed used for fertilizer around the Aviero lagoon, although it is also used for carrying hay and bedding grass -in other words it is a farmer's boat. The seaweed (molico) is gathered with rakes that are jammed to the boat's gunwale and are dragged by the boat with the sail hoisted or, failing the wind, by quanting (poling and walking along the boat at the same time).
This boat was brought to England by Ellerman Container Line, who, along with Cawoods Containers Limited and the Manchester Ship Canal Company, gave their services to the Museum free.
