The Valboeiro was used for salmon fishing and as a ferry between villages on the banks of the river. it was often easier for people to use the boat than to climb up the banks of the river to reach the somewhat scarce bridges that spanned the river.
The boat was propelled on the river with oars by an oarsman in the standing position, facing forwards so he could see and negotiate the varying conditions and obstacles in the fast flowing water and along the steep banks, rocky cliffs and small sandy beaches.
A part of the Ellerman Collection.
