The Shahoof is found all the coast of South-East Arabia and varies in length from fifteen to sixty feet. It is a fishing craft traditionally propelled by oar and lateen sail. It is less well adapted to power propulsion than other craft found in these waters due to the unusual formation of the stern.
The unique form of steering of the Shahoof is porbably of purely Arab origin and it is interesting not only on account of curious tiller but also for the balanced rudder. Releasing the cord holding the rudder into it's groove immediately allows the rudder to float free, thus preventing being damaged by grounding.
Being a beach boat there is no necessity for a rubbing strake, through a short length has been used to protect the planking from wear of the rope used for hauling in the fishing baskets.
This Shahoof was presented to the collection by the Dubai office of Gray, Mackenzie & Co. Ltd. (Dubai is one of the seven states which form the United Arab Emirates.)
