Description

Believe it or not this is a standard fishing boat from Lanyu, an island 75 miles South East of Taiwan.

Equally surprising - there is nothing Chinese or even Japanese about it.

The method of leaving wooden lugs on the inside of the planks is very wasteful of wood and can be seen in the Solomon Islands planked canoe. The planks which have not yet been cut with a saw, are also fastened to each other with wooden dowels as are boats from Malaysia and Indonesia.

These pecularities all point to southward for the origins of the Yami people, but where?
