The religion of Bali is Hinduism with highly developed animistic overtones - their boats, trees, houses and perhaps even bicycles, have spirits within them of their own or of visitors. The only Indonesian boats with eyes and even a nose are found in Bali.
This little Jukung - a Jukung is a dugout canoe with outriggers - is a fishing boat and also, on the tourist beaches, a tripping boat. It seems to have not only a small red nose but also a long white one and it has to be admitted that neither serve any practical purpose though the owners would be inclined to disagree. Sadly though, in 1988 there seemed to be a tendancy creeping in to dispense with these refinements on the tourist beaches - and if so we are witnessing an example of an unattractive aspect of European so-called culture causing the retreat of the religious manifestations of the people they rub up against, or is there some other and much simpler explanation?
The sail material is not to be derided and is quite adequate for the winds it has to cope with. It is rot-proof, light, easy to stitch, colourful and above all, cheap. Ultra-violet light is its only enemy, though it could not stand a good blow.
