Canoe racing in the Malasian archipelago has superseded canoe fighting but the evolution of the boat has continued, possibly even accelerated.
The failing most frequently found in large light dugouts is the splitting of the wood, usually in the bottom of the boat. In this craft these splits have been drawn together with stiches. This sometimes only leads to further splitting, and thus patching is necessary. Apart from this the dug-out is a remarkably robust and long-lasting craft and is far from a clumsy or crude vessel.
This particular craft, hollowed out from a single tree trunk, was presented to the Museum by Sir Muda 'Omar' Ali Saifuddin, the former Sultan of Brunei, and represented him in the canoe regattas held in Bandar Seri Begawan, yellow being the royal colour.
