Dugouts are still used in vast numbers in many parts of the world and are even now by far the most common form of hull found in Central America and in the Congo Basin. As they are generally rather long and thin they make poor sailing boats unless fitted with outriggers, when they immediately become, because of those same characteristics, among the fastest of working boats.
This dugout was given to the museum by Captain Adrian Small who purchased it in Central America, when taking the 'Golden Hind' (a replica of Drake's ship built by Hinks of Appledore) through Panama en route to San Francisco.
